Welcome to Area 3 which comprises the U.K and the Republic of Ireland

Pat Tyner

Zonta arrived in Britain with the chartering of London 1 in 1949.This was followed later by London 11 and, as to be expected in such a cosmopolitan city, they have members born in as many as 14 different countries. Oxford, by comparison, being situated in a University City, consisted mainly of Academics in the beginning. The Clubs in Ireland and Scotland also recruit their members from a relatively small area.

Unfortunately the culture of Area 3 does not lend itself to
competition to becoming a member of a women's club
committed to service and fundraising and we therefore do not have as many Clubs as we would wish. However our members are enthusiastic and committed and enjoy meetings, both social and business, the the area and attending District and International Conventions.

Fundrasing, comprising cocktail parties at various high profile locations, locations, lunches, coffee mornings, charity shops and other ventures is very successful and gives donations to many work while causes. Our main concern is women's health and we support research into ovarian cancer, osteoporosis and breast cancer. Help has also been given to victims of brain damage, children with cancer, local hospices, schemes to help the disabled and women's refuges. An educational scheme for girls in Afghanistan and the supply of cattle to farmers in Africa, Asia and Eastern Europe are among our overseas projects.
